چکیده

Control of the Panama Canal Basin transfers from the United States of America to the Republic of Panama on the last day of 1999. The Panamanian and United States governments are concerned that the rapid deforestation of the Panama Canal Basin will jeopardize the future operation of the Panama Canal, the capacity and quality of potable water supplied to Panama City, and the diverse rain forest ecosystems of the central Isthmus of Panama. In April 1996, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) funded the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to assist the Panamanian Instituto de Recursos Naturales Renovables (INRENARE) in establishing an environmental monitoring program in the Panama Canal Watershed (PMCC) with a focus on monitoring the effects of deforestation and urbanization within the Watershed. This project ends in 1998. Objectives were to establish initial monitoring, to train personnel, to obtain baseline results, and to leave a viable monitoring program in the hands of INRENARE. It is segregated into four components with four Principal Investigators (PI). Robert Stallard is PI of “Soils and Hydrology;” Richard Condit is PI of “Forest Cover;” Roberto Ibáñez is PI of “Vertebrate Diversity,” and Stanley Heckadon is PI of “Sociology.”

Modeling the effects of elevation data resolution on the performance of topography-based watershed runoff simulation

The spatial uncertainty of a topography based rainfall runoff model (TOPMODEL) is addressed in this study to assess its variability in simulating watershed hydrologic response with regards to the change of digital elevation model (DEM) resolution. Twelve DEM realizations of different grid sizes ranging from 30 m to 3000 m for each of two case watersheds are used for comparative examinations. Th...

Comparison of Three GIS-Based Hydrological Models

Three geographic information system GIS -based distributed hydrological models were developed for flood simulation and forecasting in a subbasin of the Yellow River. A grid-and-topography-based distributed hydrological physical model, i.e., the GTOPMODEL model, is described that includes vegetation and root interception, evapotranspiration, and runoff generation via the saturation excess mechan...

Topographic Effects on Stormflow Acidity

Topographic Effects on Stormflow Acidity David Wolock 1 This paper describes the theoretical and observed effects of topography onstormflow acidity in upland, forested watersheds. The theoretical effects were determined by a sensitivity analysis using the hydrologic model TOPMODEL. The observed effects were determined by an analysis of topographic and stormflow acidity data collected from eight...

A Local Forecast of Land Surface Wetness Conditions Derived from Seasonal Climate Predictions

An ensemble local hydrologic forecast derived from the seasonal forecasts of the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI) is presented. Three-month seasonal forecasts were used to resample historical meteorological conditions and generate ensemble forcing datasets for a TOPMODEL-based hydrology model. Eleven retrospective forecasts were run at Florida and New York sites. Fo...

Power function decay of hydraulic conductivity for a TOPMODEL-based infiltration routine

TOPMODEL rainfall-runoff hydrologic concepts are based on soil saturation processes, where soil controls on hydrograph recession have been represented by linear, exponential, and power function decay with soil depth. Although these decay formulations have been incorporated into baseflow decay and topographic index computations, only the linear and exponential forms have been incorporated into i...

Uncertainty, sensitivity analysis and the role of data based mechanistic modeling in hydrology

In this paper, we discuss the problem of calibration and uncertainty estimation for hydrologic systems from two points of view: a bottom-up, reductionist approach; and a top-down, data-based mechanistic (DBM) approach. The two approaches are applied to the modelling of the River Hodder catchment in North-West England. The bottom-up 5 approach is developed using the TOPMODEL, whose structure is ...
